The ERIC Forum submitted a response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the establishment of a European Framework for Science Diplomacy.
In its contribution, the ERIC Forum supported the creation of an EU-level framework, underscoring both the strategic value of science diplomacy and the essential role that European research infrastructures already play in advancing it. At the same time, it stressed several major challenges that must be addressed for the framework to be effective, most notably the complexity of coordinating responsibilities across multiple governance levels, the need to balance open science with security considerations, and the lack of dedicated resources for research infrastructures to fully contribute.
The ERIC Forum, therefore, called for clearer prioritisation, strengthened cross-sectoral and cross-ministerial collaboration, early involvement of research infrastructures in implementation, and concrete measures to ensure the framework is inclusive, sustainable, and adequately funded.
