The European Strategy on Research and Technology Infrastructures, adopted in September 2025, sets out the EU’s priorities for strengthening research and technology infrastructures to support scientific excellence and innovation. In October 2025, the ERIC Forum issued its response to the Strategy, contributing its perspective on implementation priorities and funding requirements.

The strategy examines fragmented access to facilities, inadequate funding coordination, and persistent regional disparities across the continent. It identifies five priority areas: ecosystem reinforcement through investment and digitalisation, improved access for researchers and companies, talent attraction and retention, enhanced governance frameworks, and strengthened international cooperation. The document responds to calls from the Letta and Draghi reports, which identified infrastructures as essential for Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitive positioning in global markets.

The ERIC Forum, representing 30 of 32 European Research Infrastructure Consortia, welcomes the strategy while emphasising critical implementation requirements. In the Call, the Forum strongly endorses consolidating the fragmented EU infrastructure landscape and establishing integrated, sustainable access schemes. However, it stresses that success fundamentally depends on adequate funding mechanisms. The Forum advocates for a dedicated pillar for ERA and Research Infrastructures under FP10 to support operations and long-term development. Without sustained investment in overarching developments and new service integration, ERICs cannot maintain global leadership or deliver their full potential for scientific excellence and industrial competitiveness.
